A total of 228,000 migrant workers chose to remain at their posts in the Wuxi National Hi-tech District (WND) during this year's Spring Festival holiday, which ran from Feb 11 to 17, thanks to the district's efforts to strengthen COVID-19 prevention and control efforts nationwide, according to a local news report.

Companies were encouraged to issue red envelopes, organize cultural and recreational activities, guarantee vacations and other benefits, and raise salaries to motivate employees to stay.

Yang Xiaoqin, production supervisor of Infineon Wuxi, said that this is the first time she has spent her Spring Festival holiday in Wuxi since coming to work in the city 15 years ago.

"The subsidies offered by the local government and the company allowed me to earn about 5,000 yuan ($772.66) over the seven-day holiday, greatly arousing the enthusiasm of employees," said Yang.

She added that the company issued red envelopes and offered a big New Year's Eve dinner for employees, encouraging migrant workers to stick to their posts for the holiday.

Authorities of Infineon Wuxi said that in order to encourage employees to stay put during the Spring Festival and promote off-peak travel, the company had issued a series of measures to stabilize employment, such as distributing cash bonuses and subsidies to those continuing to work during the holiday, ensuring that more than 95 percent of employees choose to stay during the holiday, and making sure that the company's production lines continue operating.
