The Wuxi Grand Theatre held a folk music concert on Jan 8, which featured many classical music pieces.
A number of famed musicians, including erhu player Deng Jiandong, suona (a Chinese wind instrument) player Li Zhuo, pipa (Chinese lute) player Dong Xiaolin, and Wuxi Opera composer Cai Yu, delivered a variety of outstanding performances.
Students from Wuxi Meicun Experimental Primary School also performed alongside professional musicians as part of an erhu orchestra.
The concert was co-organized by the publicity department of Wuxi and the Wuxi Xinwu district government and hosted by Meicun sub-district. It was meant to enrich people's cultural lives and promote the development of folk music, particularly erhu music.

The erhu, a two-stringed bowed musical instrument, is suitable for solo performances, small ensembles, and large orchestras. It is the most popular member of the huqin family of traditional bowed string instruments used by various ethnic groups in China.
Meicun is often recognized as the "home of the erhu" due to its status as one of the birthplaces of Wu Culture. Meicun has a number of factories, some of which were set up as early as 1965, that produce the instrument.
In order to further promote the instrument, the "Mei Cun Er Hu" erhu brand was launched during the concert. The brand will work with many famous erhu makers from Meicun.
