ISO chooses China's IoT standards

(chinadaily.com.cn)Updated: 2018-07-20

China's Internet of Things Reference Architecture (IoT RA), namely the ISO/IEC 30141, has passed its last round of international voting for the Final Draft International Standard (FDIS), according to the latest news from the ISO technical committee in charge of the global standardization in the area of IoT and related technologies on July 9.

"Following international practice, the approval through the final vote means that our IoT standards will soon be officially published," said Liu Haitao, director of the Wuxi IoT Research Institute, which is the maker of the ISO/IEC 30141.

Since the launch of the IoT RA in September 2013, many countries, including China, the United States, Britain, Japan, and Sweden, had been competing for the final say in the emerging area of IoT. Against all odds, a research team from the Wuxi IoT Research Institute won the fierce international battle and sealed China's continuous leading position in the IoT industry.

"Internet is built on the US-dominated seven layers of the ISO/OSI, which greatly restricts China's development in internet core industries and poses risks to our country's information security. China's ISO/IEC 30141, on the other hand, will be universally accepted in the IoT industry like a 'constitutional law', serving as a solid foundation for its long-term development," Liu remarked.

Wuxi city, in Jiangsu province, became China's first and only national demonstration zone for IoT in 2009 and has been the birthplace of numerous international IoT standards. With phenomenal growth in IoT-related industries in the city in recent years, Wuxi is also the permanent host of the World Internet of Things Exposition.
